The Winslow Lady Bulldogs won their own Winter Classic with a 57-37 victory over the Tuba City Lady Warriors Saturday. They ended the 2013 portion of their season with a 7-3 record.
The Bulldogs defeated the Snowflake Lady Lobos 53-28 on Friday in an easy victory in the first round of the tournament, earning them a matchup against the Monument Valley Lady Mustangs on Saturday. Monument Valley defeated Westwood 50-45 to advance to the semifinals.
The Bulldogs built a commanding 18-2 first quarter lead and were never threatened in a game that was more one sided than the final score would indicate. The lead was 33-7 at the half and 40-18 after three quarters.
Shandiin Armao was game’s top scorer with 13 points for Winslow. All 13 Bulldogs scored.
Annika Decker led Snowflake with 9 points.
In other action on Thursday, Chinle defeated Joseph City 69-24 and Snowflake bested Hopi 56-32. On Friday, Tuba City cruised by Cholla 64-13, Window Rock edged Chinle 63-56 and Monument Valley topped Westwood 50-45. In losers’ bracket games on Friday Hopi topped Cholla and Westwood beat Joseph City, but scores were not available.
On Saturday the Bulldogs got a surprisingly easy 46-23 win over the Monument Valley Lady Mustangs in a semifinal game. Most of the fourth quarter was played with a running clock as Winslow had a lead sufficient for that rule to come into effect.
The Lady Bulldogs led 11-5 after the first quarter and 21-12 at the half. The margin was a whopping 38-14 after three quarters.
Armao led all scorers with 14 points for Winslow, followed by Hayes with 12.
Ohivah Shirley led Monument Valley with 13 points.
The win earned Winslow a berth in the championship game against the Tuba City Lady Warriors, 78-55 winners over the Window Rock Lady Scouts.
Winslow scored the first nine points of Saturday’s championship game and led 9-2 at the end of the first quarter. The Bulldogs maintained approximately that margin until the closing minutes of the game. The margin was 27-16 at the half and 41-30 after three quarters.
Hayes led Winslow with a career high 21 points, followed by Armao with 15.
Sydney Tsinigini led Tuba City with 10 points. Shauntea Chee and Samytha Parrish each scored 8 for the Warriors.
Window Rock won third place with a 57-47 win over Monument Valley.
In losers’ bracket games on Saturday, Joseph City beat Cholla 57-42 and Chinle beat Hopi, with no score available on that game. Snowflake beat Westwood and Chinle later won the consolation championship over Snowflake, but scores were not available from those games. Westwood beat Hopi 46-35.
