The Lobos opened the 2014 portion of their schedule in fine form with a solid 66-38 road win over Payson on Friday night.
Snowflake overcame a slow beginning to lead by two points at the half. In the third period the Lobos finally shook off the holiday rust and played very well, especially on the defensive end of the floor where they held the Longhorns to just 14 second-half points.
Rick Shumway netted seven of his team high 18 points and Kegan Kay added six to his total in a dominating third period run for the Lobos, who outscored Payson 24-6 in that quarter to gain control of the game. They then doubled up the home team in the final period, cruising to the win.
Twelve of the 13 players on Snowflake’s roster made it into the scorebook, led by Shumway. Kay scored 9, Luke Lewis had 8 with seven boards, Ty Reidhead finished with 6 points and four steals, while Travis Flake added 6 points and pulled down six boards. Dallin Fussleman netted 5 points, followed by Tanner Crosby with 4; Kurt Wood, 3; Jordan Gardner, Keegan Bjorn, and Everett Lunt, 2 each; and Porter Black, 1.
With the win the Lobos improved to 12-4 on the season and 4-0 in power point games. All remaining games on their schedule now count toward the final power point standings. After playing at Holbrook on Tuesday, the Lobos will travel to Sedona on Thursday, Jan. 9, then hit the road again on Tuesday, Jan. 14, for a short trip to Show Low. On Thursday, Jan. 16, they finally return to their home court for a matchup with Alchesay.
