The Roadrunners drew a split in their games last week, coming from behind to stun Round Valley on Thursday night, then falling to the Sand Devils after a long trip to Page on Saturday.
Playing in Round Valley’s old gym on Thursday the Roadrunners fell behind early despite seven first period points from Abrian Dickson. They played better defensively in the second, but still trailed by seven at the half. In the third that deficit grew even larger and Holbrook trailed by 10 with eight minutes to play. The fourth quarter belonged to the Roadrunners. Kyle Chee scored 10 of his team high 18 in the final period and Holbrook’s defense clamped down, holding Round Valley to just seven to win the game 54-51.
Chee finished with 18 including a pair of three-point shots. Dontae Hollins added 8; Dickson 7; Andon Hatch, 6; Marcel Young, 5; Miireux Begaii and Kelsey Foster, 4 each; and Marlin Martin, 2.
Holbrook made five of seven free throws and hit five treys.
Weston Ziegler of Round Valley led all scorers with 19 points.
The Elks aided Holbrook’s fourth quarter comeback by making just one of six free throws in the final eight minutes. They were one of eight from the line for the game.
Playing in Page on Saturday afternoon the Roadrunners went cold from the field in the second period and trailed the Sand Devils 28-11 at the half. A strong third period, which included three-point shots from Martin, Chee and Hatch, helped Holbrook trim the lead to just 10 heading to the fourth. The Sand Devils hit their free throws down the stretch, handing Holbrook a 62-47 loss. Page made 27 of 36 charity tosses in the win.
Holbrook was paced by Martin with 11 points. Chee added 9; Hatch, 7; Dickson, 5; Begaii and Young, 4 each; Casey Nelson, 3; and Foster and Triston Zahne, 2 each.
Holbrook made seven of eight free throw attempts and hit six three-point shots against the taller Page team.
Holbrook’s record stands at 9-9 on the season. After hosting Payson Tuesday night, they will travel to Globe to face the Tigers on Saturday, Jan. 18. On Wednesday, Jan. 22, Holbrook will host Blue Ridge.
