Judge Evelyn Marez of the Holbrook Justice Court has been selected as the presiding judge for justice courts in Navajo County. Justice courts, also known as “The Peoples’ Court,” are the first venue for individuals to seek justice.
As the new presiding justice court judge, Judge Marez: exercises administrative supervision over the justices of the peace, pro tem judges and hearing officers; performs administrative duties as delegated by the presiding judge of the county; calls meetings of the justices of the peace of the county, and administers committees, and settles conflicts of interest with judges and attorneys; and represents the justice court(s) of Navajo County on issues before the board of supervisors, the Arizona Supreme Court and the legislature.
This selection of trust comes by the vote of her peers after three years of service as justice of the peace for Precinct One, and the experience of 30 years in the criminal justice system and community involvement.
Judge Marez said she looks forward to this new challenge and values the confidence that has been entrusted to her by her colleagues. She believes she can be a consensus builder between the courts, the board of supervisors and the state legislature to benefit all the citizens of Navajo County.
She noted that she is “honored and humbled” by this selection.
