The Roadrunners’ up and down season continued Tuesday night in Holbrook where the Birds defeated visiting Payson 54-52. Holbrook hasn’t won or lost more than two games in a row since the first week of December and this win came on the heels of Saturday’s loss at Page, which followed a road win at Round Valley.
Holbrook started quickly, jumping out to a seven-point lead behind six first period points from Dontae Hollins. Marlin Martin and Kyle Chee each added four in the first.
Four points was the total team output in the second period, allowing the Longhorns to take a 31-23 halftime lead. Both teams scored well in the third, leaving the Roadrunners down by seven going to the final quarter.
Martin netted six in the fourth, as did running mate Chee. With Holbrook trailing by seven with just over three minutes left Marcel Young canned a big three-point shot giving the Birds the momentum they needed to get the come from behind victory.
Holbrook was led in scoring by Chee with 17 points. Martin added 15; Hollins, 10; Young, 5; Abrian Dickson, 3; and Andon Hatch and Triston Zahne, 2 each.
Holbrook made 10 of 19 free throw attempts and hit just two three-point field goals.
Payson was led by Matt Davis with 19. Chaz Davis added 12; Kain England, 8; Austin Young, 5; Jared Varner, 3; Ryan Wacker and William Youngberg, 2 each; and Spencer Herrera, 1.
The Longhorns made five of 10 charity tosses and connected on five treys.
With the win, the Roadrunners upped their overall mark to 10-9. They will play in Globe on Saturday, Jan. 18, then return home for a pair of games next week, hosting Blue Ridge on Wednesday and Show Low on Friday. Next Saturday they travel to the Wildcat Den to face top ranked Chinle.
