The Lobos went 2-1 in last week’s basketball action, moving their overall season mark to 16-4 with wins over Alchesay and Monument Valley, preceded by a loss to Show Low.
Playing at Show Low on Tuesday, the Lobos struggled out of the gate, getting doubled up by the Cougars in the first eight minutes. They trailed by 10 at the half and never could rally enough to get back into the game, eventually taking the 67-62 loss.
Kurt Wood led the team with 13 points. Travis Flake added 10 with 10 rebounds. Rick Shumway also netted 10. Jordan Gardner finished with 6, as did Kegan Kay. Ty Reidhead helped with 5 points and 10 boards. Dallin Fusselman also chipped in 5 points, Luke Lewis, 4, and Gunner Caldwell, 3.
Thursday’s home game with Alchesay started better, but the Lobos still trailed by one at the close of the first. In the second period they found their shooting touch, outscoring the Falcons to lead by eight at the half. That margin grew to double digits in the third, then Snowflake held off a late charge by Alchesay in the fourth by making nine of 12 free throws to win the game 64-58.
Fusselman and Shumway scored 16 each to lead the Lobos. Kay added 9, and Reidhead finished with 7 and 11 rebounds. Wood had 4, as did Flake, who also pulled in 10 rebounds. Lewis helped with 2.
Monument Valley made the long trip to Snowflake to take on the Lobos on Saturday and left with a 65-60 loss. This time Snowflake came out ready to play, building a 20-7 first period lead. The Lobos led by 15 going into the fourth and gave a lot of that back in the final eight minutes, but still earned the win.
Shumway had a big night, scoring 22 points. Fusselman added 13; Gardner, 10; Wood, 9; Flake, 8; Lewis, 2; and Reidhead, 1.
Snowflake headed into this week’s action ranked fourth in the Division III power points with an 8-1 record. After playing Alchesay on Tuesday in Whiteriver, the Lobos will travel to Eagar tonight (Jan. 22) to face Round Valley. On Friday Payson makes a visit, then next Tuesday Snowflake travels to Globe.
