The Mingus Marauders defeated the Bulldogs 64-62 in an exciting game played Monday at Winslow. The loss dropped Winslow’s record to 15-9 for the season.
The game started with a technical foul from which Mingus scored two points. Winslow scored quickly, though, and held a 17-6 lead after the first quarter. Mingus used a barrage of three-point shots to come back and take a 34-24 halftime lead. A close third quarter saw the Marauders still leading 53-45 entering the closely played fourth quarter that was not decided until Winslow’s last shot was missed.
Mingus hit five of its nine treys in the second quarter and benefited from better free throw shooting than the Bulldogs, hitting 17 of 22 while Winslow made 17 of 30. Both teams had ample reason to be proud of their effort as both played extremely hard and both came back from significant deficits to keep the outcome in doubt.
Talon Walz led all scorers with 18 points for Mingus. He played brilliantly on the floor and made nine of 10 free throws. Bryant Briscoe added 12 points for the Marauders; Herb Tiffany, 11; and Mizah Nevarez, 10.
Keenan Keams led Winslow with 17 points, all in the second half. Trelonnie Sanders and Milland Thomas scored 11 each, and Stevin Nelson added 10.
