A Winslow man is in custody after he reportedly led law enforcement officers on a high-speed chase in a stolen vehicle last Friday.
According to the Winslow Police Department, at 10:40 a.m. on Jan. 17, a Winslow woman reported that a man, later identified as David Acosta, 36, of Winslow, had stolen her vehicle from the 800 block of North Berton Avenue. When the woman tried to stop Acosta, he attempted to run her down, causing injury to one of her legs.
Responding officers tracked Acosta as he sped through the city at speeds of up to 80 mph. The officers were forced to back off the pursuit due to a school bus in the vicinity, but were able to follow Acosta as he left Winslow heading south on Highway 87 toward Payson.
The Department of Public Safety was called in as Acosta headed out of the city and into Coconino County at speeds exceeding 100 mph. Acosta was finally stopped without incident near Strawberry with road spike strips at 1:50 p.m.
Acosta was arrested by DPS officers and booked into the Gila County Jail on charges of unlawful flight from a law enforcement officer, unlawful use of a means of transportation, five warrants and 11 counts of endangerment.
