The Winslow High School speech and debate team competed along 35 other high school teams at the 15th annual Bobcat Bonanza held Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at Central High School in Phoenix. With a small team of only 14 students, WHS took home a finals round honor in poetry and semi-finals honors in duet acting, expository speaking, original oratory and poetry. Four competitors reached quarterfinals.
Nathaniel Renney ranked sixth in the tournament in poetry with his presentation of And to This Day, a powerful poem about bullying. Five Winslow entries broke to semi-finals, including Brittany Fischer in expository speaking; Preston Greenwood and Luke McCauley, duet acting; Michael Lane and Aura Renney, duet acting; Nathaniel Renny, poetry; and Jude Tombo, original oratory.
Quarterfinalists were Preston Greenwood in prose, Luke McCauley in humor, David Messer in prose, and Lexi Sievers in both dramatic interpretation and impromptu.
Also participating in three preliminary rounds of the tournament were Cheyenne Armijo, Michael Lane and Aura Renney in prose, Kenzie Blackgoat in poetry, Clinton Contreras in dramatic interpretation, Daniel Lane in expository speaking and Shaun White in humor.
Michael Lane and Nathaniel Renney also competed in public forum debate on the topic of the recent Supreme Court decision on Section Four of the Voting Rights Act.
The Bobcat Bonanza Tournament has been chosen as a National Individual Events Tournament of Champions qualifying tournament for the fourth straight year.
The team is coached by Sarah Smithson and Marianne Richardson, with volunteer help from Chris and Linda Card, Jean Glenn, Sally Masterson, Ashley McLaws, Laurel Palmer and Zack Young.
The team is preparing for competition on Feb. 14 and 15 at Thunderbird High School in Phoenix, and for the AIA Division II State Tournament on March 14 and 15 at Shadow Mountain High School in Phoenix.
