The Lady Roadrunners played poorly in their sectional semifinal round loss to Snowflake Tuesday night in Show Low. For the second time in a row, the Holbrook squad was unable to get the upper hand over the Lady Lobos.
Snowflake played a more physical game and took it to the Roadrunners, especially in the paint, where Jessica Neff had an outstanding game scoring 30 points. Holbrook didn’t appear to have anyone on its roster capable of stopping Neff on the night.
“Jessica is a good player, but we sure made it easier for her to get her points. She played much more aggressive than we did, and we backed away from her physical play instead of stepping up to it,” said Holbrook Coach Greg Perkins. “Throughout the game they were more aggressive and in basketball the more aggressive team usually wins.
“Now we have to refocus our attention on the state tournament. The good news is we now have a week to prepare for the state tournament. We will host a first round game, much like last year, and hopefully it will give us a good start into the state tournament.”
Holbrook struggled out of the gate, missing numerous inside shots and trailed 16-7 at the close of the first period. In the second Teyah Goldtooth, who later left the game with an injury, hit three of her five three-point shots to help Holbrook keep pace.
Neff took over in the third, scoring 13 of her game high 30. In the fourth the Roadrunners cut the lead to seven on a couple of occasions, but they were never able to get any closer than that as they suffered a 69-52 loss.
Goldtooth led Holbrook in scoring with 19 points. Rochelle Nez added 11; Cheyenne Lester, 9; Summer Olney, 7; Quanyyah Lester, 4; and Dishie Kinlicheenie, 2.
Holbrook made just 14 of 24 free throws and hit six three-point shots.
Neff led Snowflake with 30 points. Annika Decker added 11; Marisa Godfrey, 8; Courtney Baldwin, 7; Kadi Johnson, 6; Tycee Coplan, 3; and Tori Flake and Macie Rawlins, 2 each.
The Lobos made 20 of 30 free throw attempts and hit three treys.
Snowflake will play Winslow in the sectional championship game at 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15. Holbrook will host a team yet to be determined at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at Muñoz Gym. The final state playoff bracket will not be set until Sunday afternoon.
