The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Payson Lady Longhorns 66-43 in a Division III Sectional Tournament game played Tuesday night in Show Low. The win improved Winslow’s record to 21-4 for the season and dropped Payson’s to 12-16. Winslow will play Snowflake, a 69-52 winner over Holbrook in an earlier game on Tuesday, for the sectional championship on Saturday, Feb. 15, in Show Low.
The Bulldogs built a 15-5 lead in the first quarter despite missing all five of their free throws and a plethora of close shots. They also lost Shandiin Armao to an ankle injury for the last two minutes of that quarter and all of the second period. She came back and did play in the third quarter, but scored a season low two points.
The second period was evenly played and Winslow maintained a 29-19 lead at halftime. The Bulldogs clinched the victory with a huge third quarter after which they led 49-26. Reserves played most of the final period.
Halle Hayes led all scorers with 20 points for the Bulldogs. Marcella Joe was also in double figures for Winslow with 12 points, and had an outstanding game on defense and an abundance of assists. Jayce Sangster also finished in double figures for the Bulldogs with 10 points, including some key baskets early when she and Hayes did most of the scoring.
Tessa Hintze led Payson with 14 points, followed by Arrissa Paulson with 12 and Cori Barnett with 11.
