The Thatcher Eagles defeated the Bulldogs 66-61 in a very close Division III State Tournament game played in Winslow Tuesday night. The loss ended Winslow’s season with a 20-13 record and sent Thatcher to Tucson to play Benson with a 21-10 record.
Winslow led 23-21 after the first quarter and 40-36 at the half, but Thatcher came back to tie the score 50-50 at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter was evenly played, but Thatcher had a narrow lead entering the final minute and Winslow missed several opportunities to close the gap.
Reed Goodman led all scorers with 25 points for Thatcher, including making 13 of 16 free throws. Jeff Shumway added 12 points; Mason Mortenson, 11; and Brandon Jorgenson, 10.
Keenan Keams led Winslow with 12 points, followed by Frank Kelly with 11 and Stevin Nelson with 10.
The Bulldogs hit five three-point shots in the first quarter and one in the second, but only one in the second half. Thatcher made only two three-pointers in the game, but had 23 two-point goals to just 12 for the Bulldogs. Winslow was 16 of 29 on charity shooting while the Eagles were 14 of 22.
