After upsetting Northwest Christian in the first round of the state tournament last Tuesday night, the 22nd ranked Roadrunners battled tough in the second round before their season came to a close with a hard fought, 57-54 overtime loss to sixth seeded Combs.
Playing at Copper Canyon High School in Glendale, the Roadrunners started the game well, leading by eight at the close of the first. In the second they pushed that lead to double digits before a late first half run by Combs left Holbrook within a four-point halftime edge.
An evenly played third period kept Holbrook in front by four heading to the fourth. In the final eight minutes of regulation play, Combs made up the four-point margin to force overtime.
Kyle Chee’s two points in overtime were the only ones the Roadrunners could muster. Combs only scored five, but it was enough to end Holbrook’s season.
Chee finished with 13, while Marlin Martin and Andon Hatch were the only other Holbrook players in double figures with 11 points each.
Holbrook wrapped up the regular season with an overall record of 15-16.
