Snowflake’s new head baseball coach, Josh Craner, has his Lobo squad off to a good start for the 2014 season. Competing in the three-day Safford Invitational last week, the Lobos went 4-0, with their closest contest an eight-run decision.
Seniors on this year’s roster include Garrett Jackson, Nate Kelley, Dallin Fusselman, Jarom Beecroft, Hunter Bauer and Ty Reidhead. They are joined by juniors Dalon Reidhead, Caedon Ervien and Matt Lamb. Sophomores on the team include Bradley Clark, Jake Lyman, Ty Pawlik, Tanner Crosby, Tyler Claridge and Tyler Hanson. Terrian Reidhead is the only freshman on the roster.
In their opening game on Thursday the Lobos beat Safford 9-1, pounding out 15 hits. Bauer led the way going two for three with a double, a triple, two RBIs and scored a run. Ervien, Hanson and Kelley each went two for four. Fusselman was one for three with a triple. Jackson also tripled, going one for two.
Beecroft worked five innings on the hill, giving up four hits with one run, five strikeouts and two walks. Pawlik pitched two innings, allowing just one hit with two walks and two strikeouts.
Friday’s first game was a 15-2 rout over Tombstone.
The Lobos again hit the ball well, collecting 16 total hits. Bauer had another strong game, going three for three with a triple, three RBIs and scored three runs. Beecroft was two for three with a double and a triple. Crosby went two for two and scored three runs.
Jackson pitched two innings, giving up one hit with one walk and one strikeout. Lamb pitched one inning, allowing two hits. Fusselman pitched two innings, giving up one hit with two strikeouts and one walk.
In their second game on Friday Snowflake shut out Benson, 12-0.
Hanson pitched four innings, giving up four hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Jake Lyman pitched one inning with two strikeouts and three walks.
At the plate Dalon Reidhead went two for three with a triple and scored three runs. Lamb was two for two. Pawlik went one for one with a two-run homer. Lyman was one for one with a double and an RBI.
Snowflake blanked Hayden on Saturday morning, winning the contest 13-0.
Several players hit the ball well, led by Lyman, Ervien and Crosby, who all went two for two. Clark was two for four with a double. Ty Reidhead also went two for four. Claridge was one for one with a home run.
On the hill, Kelley worked three innings, striking out six. Crosby pitched 12/3 innings, allowing two hits with four strikeouts. Dalon Reidhead pitched a third of an inning, giving up one hit.
After playing at Winslow on Tuesday, the Lobos will host Thatcher today (March 5), then welcome in Window Rock on Thursday, March 6. On March 13 they will play in Holbrook.
