The Winslow Bulldogs baseball team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, March 8, to the Sand Devils at Page 5-4. The Bulldogs got back on the winning road on Tuesday at home with a 12-1 win over the Holbrook Roadrunners. That left the Bulldogs with a 6-1 record going into their home game with the tough Flagstaff Eagles on Thursday. Ironically, the Bulldogs are slated to journey to Flagstaff on Saturday, March 15, for a rematch with the Eagles.
In the game at Page, Matthew Ramos took the loss despite a good pitching performance in which he worked five innings and gave up five runs, only two earned, on six hits and three walks. Caleb Cirre worked a perfect inning in relief.
Winslow scored an unearned run in the top of the second inning on two Page errors, but fell behind 2-1 in the bottom of the frame on two Page singles and a pair of walks. The Bulldogs regained the lead 3-2 in the top of the third without a hit on two walks and a hit batsman. Page went up 4-3 in the bottom of the third on a double and two Winslow errors. The Sand Devils increased their lead to 5-3 in the sixth inning on an error, a hit batsman and a double. The Bulldogs scored their final run in the top of the seventh on a double by C.J. Chacon and a single by Caleb Cirre.
Caleb Cirre was one for one, Matt Cirre and C.J. Chacon were both one for two, and Vincenzio Sells was one for three for the Bulldogs.
In the win against Holbrook, Jon Bollin got the win, working four innings and allowing no runs on just two hits and five walks. Rodney Davis worked an inning in relief, and gave up an unearned run on a hit and a walk.
Winslow took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on singles by Sells, Colton Corum, Matt Cirre and Bollin. The lead grew to 6-0 in the second inning on a triple by Chacon, singles by Rey Chavez-Velez and Corum, and a Holbrook error. The margin grew to 10-0 in the third inning on singles by Chavez-Velez and Corum, a double by Caleb Cirre, a Holbrook error and a hit batsman. The final two runs scored in the fourth inning on a walk, a hit batsman and a single by Caleb Cirre. Holbrook scored in the top of the fifth on a Winslow error, a walk and a single, but it was not enough to keep the game from ending on the 10-run mercy rule at the end of the inning.
Corum led the Bulldogs at the plate with a three for three day. Caleb Cirre was two for three with a double. Chavez-Velez was also two for three. Sells, Bollin and Chacon were all one for two, with Chacon having a triple. Matt Cirre was one for three.
The Bulldogs are slated to host the Hopi Bruins on Tuesday, March 18, the Camp Verde Cowboys on Wednesday, March 19, and the Blue Ridge Yellowjackets on Tuesday, March 25.
