John Earl Peterson, 65, of Castle Butte passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2014, in Flagstaff. Funeral services were held March 14 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center in Winslow, with President Charlie Hancock officiating. Burial followed at Desert View Cemetery in Winslow.
He was born on Sept. 13, 1948, in Rehoboth, N.M., into the Bitter Water, Red Streak Running into Water/Zuni and Towering House clans.
A former Navajo Nation police officer, John retired from Seba Dalkai Boarding School in May 2010.
He enjoyed ranching and farming, and loved spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife Rita Peterson of Castle Butte; Ervin Peterson of Phoenix, Trudy Chischillie, Lori Benally, Jonathan Peterson, Theresa Peterson, Joleen Peterson and Michelle Peterson of Dilkon, and Pamela Yazzie of Flagstaff; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Peterson; his grandparents, James and Mary Peterson of Toh-la-kai, N.M.; and a brother, Ernest Baloo of Santa Fe, N.M.
