The Winslow Lady Bulldogs exhibited true sportsmanship in the Gracie Haught Softball Classic last Saturday in Payson.
According to an article in The Payson Roundup, the Division 3 Bulldogs led the Division 1 Surprise Willow Canyon Lady Wildcats 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth when two Willow Canyon players, Lacey Colvin and Alexis Encarnacion, collided on the ball field hard enough to send them to the local hospital with concussions. The Willow Canyon coach and team left, forfeiting the game to Winslow.
The Winslow team and Coach Kelli Fifelski had gathered around the injured players praying and offering any help they could. The Bulldogs and Coach Fifelski, in a gesture of great sportsmanship, decided to give the championship trophy to the Willow Canyon team.
Coach Fifelski said that she was very proud of the decision the team made to give the trophy to Willow Canyon, but she was not surprised, as they are a good team who care about one another and their opponents as well. She is happy to be coaching a team of girls with that much character and who show that much concern for the wellbeing of all of the players, including their opponents.
