The Mingus Marauders defeated the Winslow Bulldogs 7-5 in a baseball game played in Cottonwood last Tuesday. The loss left the Bulldogs with a 10-4 record for the season.
Jon Bollin took the loss against Mingus in relief of Matt Ramos. Ramos worked two innings and gave up three runs, only one of which was earned, on three hits and a walk. Bollin gave up four runs, two of which were earned, on four hits and a walk. Caleb Cirre worked two innings and was not scored upon, but gave up a hit and a walk.
Mingus took a 3-0 lead in the second inning on three hits, a walk and two Winslow errors. The Bulldogs cut the margin to 3-2 in the top of the third on an error, a hit batsman and singles by Rey Chavez-Velez and Colton Corum. The Marauders got those runs back in the bottom of the third on a triple, a single and a hit batsman. Winslow scored in the top of the fourth on singles by Adrian Montoya, Caleb Cirre and Chavez-Velez to cut the lead to 5-3. Mingus completed its scoring and upped the lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the fourth on two singles and an error.
The Bulldogs cut the lead to 7-4 in the top of the fifth inning on singles by Henry Montiel and Matt Cirre, and to the final 7-5 margin in the top of the sixth on singles by Montoya and C.J. Chacon.
Chavez-Velez and Montoya led the Bulldogs at the plate with 2 for 3 days. Caleb Cirre and Chacon were both 1 for 3. Corum and Matt Cirre were 1 for 4, and Montiel was 1 for 5. The Bulldogs outhit Mingus nine to eight but four costly errors led to four unearned runs and decided the outcome.
The Bulldogs were to play Longhorns Tuesday at Payson, and will play the Blue Ridge Yellowjackets on Friday, April 11, at Lakeside and host the Globe Tigers the following day.
