The Lady Bulldog softball team scored an important 6-5 win over the Flagstaff Lady Eagles in Winslow last Friday, then hammered the overmatched Alchesay Lady Falcons 25-0 on Monday, also at home. The wins improved Winslow’s record to an excellent 24-1 going into Thursday’s game against the Lady Cougars at Show Low.
Taylor Baca got the win against Flagstaff, working all seven innings and giving up five runs, only two of which were earned, on six hits, a walk and a hit batsman. She fanned three.
Winslow took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on singles by Megan Lymer, Renee Bollin and Baca. The lead grew to 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning on a single by Halle Hayes and a Flagstaff error.
The Eagles took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning on a single by Mikala Rojas, a double by Kennedy Partee and two Winslow errors. The Bulldogs regained the lead 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth on a hit batsman, a Flagstaff error and a single by Hailee Branson.
Flagstaff tied the score 4-4 in the top of the fifth inning on a double by Rojas and a single by Partee. Winslow again regained the lead at 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth on a single by Jaleisa Hayes.
Flagstaff tied the game 5-5 in the top of the seventh and final inning on a home run by Jessica Mesa. The Bulldogs won the game in the bottom of the seventh after Alyssa Smith doubled, then scored on a single by Halle Hayes.
Branson was 2 for 3 at the plate. Halle Hayes was 2 for 4. Jaleisa Hayes and Baca were each 1 for 2. Smith and Bollin were each 1 for 3. Lymer was 1 for 4.
Against Alchesay, pitchers Baca and Ceyanne Benally held the Lady Falcons to just one hit and two base runners in the game, which was shortened to five innings under the mercy rule. Winslow scored an incredible 19 runs in the first inning, 15 of them before an out was recorded.
The Bulldogs are slated to meet the Lady Lobos on Wednesday, April 30, at Snowflake. That will likely end the regular season and state playoffs will begin.
