The Winslow Bulldogs baseball team got a tough 3-2 win over the Yuma Catholic Shamrocks in the Arizona State Division III Championship Tournament at Surprise. The win sent the Bulldogs into Saturday’s game with a 20-8 record and ended Yuma Catholic’s season with a 17-8 record.
Yuma Catholic took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning but had to be frustrated that they had missed great chances for a bigger lead. Joey Miranda doubled and went to third when Sam Atiyeh reached on an error, then scored on a double by Keone Mills. Atiyeh was thrown out at the plate by shortstop Colton Corum on a fielder’s choice and Custer Kinlecheenie struck out the next two batters to limit the damage to one run.
The Bulldogs dodged problems in the first two innings as they managed to leave the bases loaded with Shamrocks in both frames. Winslow committed two errors in each inning and also gave up a hit in each inning and a hit batsman in the each inning. The Shamrocks had the bases loaded with no outs in the first inning and with one out in the second but failed to score both times.
The Shamrocks increased their lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth. For the first time in the game they did not get their leadoff man on but got a two out double by Zach Boehler who scored on a single by Jerry Miranda.
The Bulldogs finally got started offensively in the bottom of the fifth inning. Vincenzio Sells reached on an infield error, Henry Montiel was hit by the pitch and Matt Ramos singled home a run. The tying run scored on a balk. Matt Cirre singled home the lead run. Two Shamrock errors helped the Bulldog rally.
Kinlecheenie got the win with relief from Ramos. Kinlecheenie worked five innings and gave up two runs on seven hits and two hit batsmen while fanning four. Ramos worked the last two innings and was not scored upon, giving up a hit and a walk. Zach Boehler took the loss for the Shamrocks but pitched well, giving up three runs, two of which were unearned, on just five hits and one walk while fanning six.
Ramos led the Bulldogs at the plate with a two for three day, including a big run batting in blow in the fateful fifth. Cirre was one for two and knocked in the game winning run. Montiel was one for two. Jon Bollin was one for three.
Yuma Catholic had four players with good days at the plate. Zach Boehler was two for three with a double. Joey Miranda and Keone Mills were two for four with Mills having a double. Max Olson was one for two.
The Bulldogs were to play the winner of a later game between Show Low and Valley Christian on Saturday.
