The Winslow Bulldogs baseball team was eliminated by the Valley Christian Trojans 12-2 in the Arizona State Division III Baseball Championship Tournament at Surprise on Saturday. Winslow finished with a 20-9 record for the season. Valley Christian advanced with a 19-9 record to meet the winner of the Sahuarita versus Northwest Christian game.
Nat Andresen won the game, going the distance for the Trojans and giving up two runs on just six hits and two walks. He fanned three. He did not give up a hit until the bottom of the third inning when Henry Montiel beat out an infield hit and Matt Ramos followed with a single.
Colton Corum took the loss and gave up five runs on 11 hits and a walk in four innings of work. He fanned four. Ramos in relief worked two and a third innings and gave up six runs on three hits and three walks. Matt Cirre worked two thirds of an inning and had two wild pitches.
Valley Christian took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning but left the bases loaded and missed a bigger opportunity. Micah Izquierdo led off with a single, followed with a single and after a ground out move the runners to second and third. Christian Sanchez beat out an infield single to load the bases. Zach Wolf was out but got the run batted in.
The Trojans increased their lead to 5-0 when Riley Nelson doubled and scored on a double by Izquierdo. After a force out Sanchez doubled home two runners and Wolf singled home another.
Valley Christian pulled further away with a run in the top of the fifth inning making it 6-0. Riley Nelson reached on a Winslow error and scored on a double by Ethan Dewit.
Winslow got on the board and cut the Valley Christian lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Rey Chavez-Velez led off with a single and scored on a triple by Vincenzio Sells. Montiel singled home Sells.
The Trojans continued to pull away in the top of the seventh, scoring six runs for a 12-2 lead. Riley Nelson led off with a single and was sacrificed to second by Nat Andresen. Izquierdo was intentionally walked for the second straight time and Dewit was also walked. Jacob Owings singled. Sanchez walked and Wolf doubled. Wolf doubled to knock Ramos out of the box.
Sells led Winslow at the plate with two hits in three trips including a triple. Montiel was two for four. Chavez-Velez and Ramos were one for three.
Izquierdo led Valley Christian with a three for three day with two doubles and two intentional walks. Dewit was two for three. Wolf was three for five with a double. Sanchez and Nelson were two for four with each having a double. Owings was one for five.
