The Winslow Bulldogs got a hard fought 3-2 win over the Yuma Catholic Shamrocks last Friday in the Arizona State Division III Baseball Tournament held in Surprise. That was just one of a number of close games in the opening two rounds of the tournament.
In the opening round on May 3, teams seeded from nine to 24 played to advance to meet a team seeded first through eighth. In that round Sahuarita defeated Combs 7-3, Yuma Catholic edged Benson 3-2, Scottsdale Christian beat River Valley 8-0, Chino Valley nipped Blue Ridge 1-0, Snowflake blasted Rio Rico 11-1, Kingman Academy shutout Willcox 1-0, Estrella Foothills blanked Monument Valley 5-0 and Valley Christian topped Walden Grove 5-2.
On Friday, Winslow nipped Yuma Catholic 3-2, Valley Christian topped Show Low 6-3, Sahuarita edged Payson 4-2, Northwest Christian slipped by Estrella Foothills 5-4, Page topped Kingman Academy 8-4, Palo Verde Magnet thumped Snowflake 13-3, Fountain Hills shutout Chino Valley 3-0 and Scottsdale Christian blanked Bisbee 6-0.
On Saturday, the field was cut to four teams as Valley Christian eliminated Winslow 12-2, Northwest Christian edged Sahuarita 7-6, Palo Verde Magnet crushed Page 15-2 and Fountain Hills eliminated Scottsdale Christian 11-1.
This Friday Fountain Hills will play Palo Verde Magnet and Valley Christian will meet Northwest Christian in semifinal games with the winners to meet on Saturday for the division championship.
