Governor Jan Brewer signed Senate Bill 1099 July 16, establishing Aug. 14 as Navajo Code Talkers Day in Arizona. Earlier this year, the bill passed both the House and Senate unanimously. “The legacy of the Navajo Code Talkers will long be remembered and honored in Arizona history. Every year across the country we celebrate Aug. 14 as National Navajo Code Talkers Day and we now have an annual observance day for the State of Arizona to honor our Code Talkers,” said Senator Carlyle Begay. “These warriors should be praised for their valued contributions to saving many lives and our way of life today. The Navajo Code Talkers should also be recognized for giving a portion of our culture–the language of our people. It is my hope that this observance day will also create more awareness of the promises that were made by our nation to all our veterans who have and are still serving our country today.” Seven Navajo Code Talkers were in attendance at the signing ceremony.
