Bryan Hulsey, a 40-year-old former Holbrook resident, was found guilty of first degree murder and attempted first degree murder by a jury on Monday, July 28, in Maricopa County Superior Court for the shooting death of Glendale Police Officer Anthony Holly and the attempted murder of Officer David Goitia. The jurors began deliberation last Thursday and were dismissed at the end of the day until Monday when a verdict was reached.

Holly was shot and killed by Hulsey during a routine traffic stop on Feb. 19, 2007, after Holly had responded to a call as backup for another officer. Testimony indicated that while Holly was removing occupants from the vehicle, one of them, Hulsey, removed a gun from his waistband and shot four times, with one of the bullets striking the officer in the face. Holly, who was 24 years old, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The sentencing phase was scheduled to begin Tuesday, with prosecutors indicating that they will seek the death penalty due to the nature of the crime and Hulsey’s past criminal record.
