Holbrook’s volleyball squad finished sixth at the Snowflake Invitational tournament held last weekend.  The Lady Roadrunners balanced four wins with four losses combining pool play and bracket matches. Holbrook picked up wins over Round Valley twice, each time by 2-0 scores, and over Winslow, 2-0, and Marana Mountain View, 2-0.  Losses were to Monument Valley, 2-0, Mountain View, 2-0, Snowflake, 2-0, and Mesquite, 2-1.

Throughout the tournament several players tallied impressive stats. Dena Kinlicheenie finished with 75 assists, 26 digs, four aces and four kills. Demi Phaturos had 57 digs, six aces, six kills and three assists. Adriana Monroe added 40 digs, 11 aces, 15 kills and an assist. Alex Jeffers-Sample helped with 28 assists, 24 digs and five aces. Alishea Kee added two kills and two digs.  Ashley Attakai had an ace, five kills, two assists and five digs. Darian Hollins finished with three aces, eight kills, an assist and three digs. Lauren Silversmith had nine kills and eight digs. Nizhoni Begay added two kills, three assists and a dig. Shayna Carlson helped with 10 kills, five assists and 10 digs. Terrilyn Lester had seven aces, 33 kills, an assist and 43 digs. Teyah Goldtooth added eight aces, 46 kills, an assist and 63 digs.

The Roadrunners headed into the tournament on the heels of an impressive come from behind home court victory over Ganado on Thursday night of last week.  They struggled through the first game, eventually rallying to win it 26-24. In the second and third their troubles continued with the Lady Hornets winning 25-19 and 25-10 to take a 2-1 lead. Holbrook nearly lost the match in the fourth game, but again rallied from behind to win it 25-23, tying the match at 2-2. The fifth game went down to the wire as well before the Roadrunners put the match away with a final Goldtooth kill to win it 15-13 and move to 4-0 in regular season matches.

Goldtooth finished with 16 kills and 13 digs.  Lester added nine kills, an assist and nine digs. Carlson had eight kills with an assist and five digs. Silversmith added six kills and three digs. Kinlicheenie finished with a kill, 36 assists and 14 digs. Phaturos added two aces, a kill, an assist and 26 digs. Hollins finished with a kill and a dig. Attakai had a kill, an assist and five digs. Jeffers-Sample added an ace, a kill, an assist and four digs. Monroe finished with three kills and 12 digs.

The Roadrunners will host Chinle’s Lady Wildcats on Saturday, Sept. 27, with the freshman match slated for 12 noon. The junior varsity will play at 1 p.m. and the varsity match will begin at 2. On Tuesday, Sept. 30, they will travel to Hopi to meet the Lady Bruins.
