After dropping a home court volleyball match to highly ranked Tuba City last Thursday, the Lady Roadrunners made a long trip to Page and came home with two hard fought, critical wins, taking both matches of a doubleheader from the host team on Saturday.

Against Tuba City, currently the fourth ranked team in Division III, Holbrook played well early, taking the first game 25-21, but the Lady Warriors found their stride, winning the next three games 25-13, 25-20, and 25-15, handing the Roadrunners just their third regular season loss.

Teyah Goldtooth led Holbrook with 14 kills, six aces, two blocks and 16 digs. Terrilyn Lester added 14 kills. Dena Kinlicheenie finished with 35 assists and 10 digs. Alex Jeffers-Sample helped with 12 assists. Adriana Monroe added 11 digs in the loss.

Saturday two victories really benefited the Birds in the power rankings.  The first match was close throughout. Holbrook won the first two games 25-21 and 25-16. Page fought back, claiming game three 27-25, and knotted the match by winning game four 25-23. The Birds eventually won the first match of the doubleheader, edging Page in the fifth game 17-15.

The second match was also close, although Holbrook finished it in four games. The Birds won the first game 27-25, took the second 25-22, dropped game three 25-21, then closed out the successful trip by winning game four 25-20.

The two victories moved the Birds’ overall regular season record to 12-3 and left them ranked ninth in Division III heading into the final week of the regular season.

Several Holbrook players gave strong efforts in the two wins, led by Goldtooth who finished the two matches with a combined 50 kills, one ace, six blocks and 61 digs. Lester added 29 kills, one ace, one assist, 2.5 blocks and 28 digs. Demi Phaturos helped with one kill, one ace, two assists and 45 digs. Shayna Carlson had 12 kills, two assists, five blocks and 14 digs. Darian Hollins added one kill and one assist. Ashley Attakai had three digs. Dena Kinlicheenie added one kill, one ace, 41 assists and 19 digs.  Monroe had 12 kills, two aces and 46 digs. Jeffers-Sample finished with two aces, 47 assists and 21 digs.

After playing at Winslow on Tuesday, the Roadrunners will host Joseph City for Senior Night in the regular season finale tonight (Oct. 29).  They will be playing in the Division III state tournament, which begins on Friday, Nov. 7, in Prescott Valley. They would really like to move out of the eighth or ninth position to avoid a potential second round match-up with top ranked Monument Valley, although any of the top five or six teams in the standings, including the Lady Mustangs, Flagstaff, Cactus, Tuba City, Coconino or Snowflake, would be tough opponents for Holbrook to overcome and advance to the second day of the state tournament.
