Despite many of the Lobo players just returning to the hardwood from football season, Snowflake still handled visiting St. Johns fairly easily in the basketball season opener for both teams last Tuesday night. Snowflake won that initial game 57-40, then picked up four more wins at the Sedona Tournament played over the weekend.
Coach Andy Wood has a veteran lineup this year with six seniors on his roster, including Gunner Caldwell, Tanner Crosby, Caedon Ervien, Porter Black, Travis Flake and Eldon McCray. They are joined by juniors Jordan Gardner, Kegan Bjornn, Kurt Wood, Ty Pawlick and Jake Lyman.
In the opener, Wood led the way with 18 points. Gardner added 14 along with 11 rebounds. Caldwell scored 12; Flake, 6; Bjornn, 5; and Ervien, 2.
The Lobos then picked up wins over Mingus, Piñon, Sedona and Page in the Sedona tourney. Their only setback was a loss to Copper Canyon.
On Thursday, Snowflake bested Mingus 68-57. Bjornn led four players in double figures with 22 points. Gardner added 13; Wood, 11; and Caldwell, 10.
Thursday’s second game resulted in a 79-68 win over Piñon. Caldwell led the way with 19, followed by Wood with 15 and Gardner with 12.
On Friday Snowflake took care of the host team Sedona, 66-39. Wood scored 16 and Caldwell finished with 14.
Saturday started well with the Lobos defeating Page, 70-48. Gardner led a balanced attack with 19 points and Wood netted 17.
Copper Canyon handed the Lobos their first loss of the season, 78-69. Bjornn led four players in double figures with 18 points. Crosby added 15, Caldwell had 12 and Kurt Wood finished with 10, marking the sixth consecutive game he had reached double figures.
After playing at Blue Ridge on Tuesday, the 5-1 Lobos will be busy in the Pepsi Tournament Thursday through Friday. On Monday, Dec. 15, they play at Window Rock.
