The Page Lady Sand Devils defeated the Winslow Lady Bulldogs 48-45 to win the Tournament of Champions at Ganado on Monday. The win kept Page undefeated at 16-0 and dropped Winslow to 10-3. The teams are slated to meet again in Winslow tonight (Jan. 2).
Page led 15-9 after the first period of play. The Bulldogs cut into the margin, but still trailed 25-21 at the intermission. Winslow had a miserable start to the third quarter and did not score in the first five minutes of the period, but came back at the end of the period and only trailed 33-28 going into the final stanza. The fourth quarter was evenly played and while Winslow got within three points late, the Sand Devils held on to earn a 48-43 victory.
Shandiin Armao led all scorers with 21 points for Winslow. Adrianna Singer added 13 for the Bulldogs.
Ember Sloan led Page with 19 points. Ashley Dempsey added 11 and Lelisa Watson, 10.
The game got a late start because a Tuba City Lady Warrior player suffered a serious injury and needed to be treated. Tuba City won the third place girls’ game.
The Bulldogs opened tournament play on Dec. 26, defeating Chinle 63-56.
They led the Lady Wildcats 20-12 at the end of the first quarter, 32-25 at the half and 49-38 after three quarters of play on their way to the victory.
Hasha Dejolie led all scorers with 25 points for Chinle. Teammate Angel Mark added 13.
Armao paced the Bulldogs with 22 points. Jayce Sangster added 10.
The next day, the Bulldogs defeated the Window Rock Lady Scouts, 63-44.
Armao led Winslow and all scorers with 25 points. Adrianna Singer scored 12 points for the Bulldogs.
Tianna Francis with 16 points and Marissa Charley with 11 led Window Rock’s offense.
