The Snowflake Lobos headed into the penultimate week of the regular season sitting firmly atop the Division III power point standings, thanks to three more home court wins last week. Victories over Alchesay, Round Valley and Payson extended their winning streak to 11 games and pushed their overall season mark to 19-2.
Snowflake jumped on top of Alchesay early on Tuesday night, setting the tone with a 26-4 first period outburst. From that point the game was played somewhat evenly, but the damage had been done and the Lobos cruised to a 72-58 win.
Keegan Bjornn led the way with 20, followed by Kurt Wood with 19; Tanner Crosby, Jordan Gardner and Caedon Ervien, 8 each; Ty Pawlick, 3; and Jake Lyman, Gunner Caldwell and Eldon McCray, 2 each.
Wednesday night another quick start by the Lobos gave them a seven-point cushion after the first against Round Valley. The second period belonged to Snowflake, too, with the Lobos pouring in 26 points to lead 44-21 at the half. Snowflake extended the lead in both the third and fourth periods en route to a 74-41 win. Bjornn again led the team in scoring with 16 points. Wood and Caldwell added 11 each; Travis Flake, 10; Gardner, 6; McCray, 4; Dallin Chapman, 2; and Lyman, 1.
Snowflake’s theme of quick starts resounded again on Friday night when the Lobos jumped on top of visiting Payson 19-6 in the first eight minutes. A strong second period pushed the margin to 43-16, giving Snowflake another commanding halftime lead. The Lobos went on to win the game 70-49.
Gardner led the team in scoring with 18 points. Flake added 11; Bjornn, 10; Wood, 7; Lyman and Caldwell, 6 each; Pawlick, 4; McCray and Crosby, 3 each; and Ervien, 2.
After closing out a long home stand with Globe on Tuesday and Blue Ridge on Thursday, Jan. 29, the Lobos will hit the road on Friday, Jan. 30, for a trip to Safford. They will close out the regular season with three road games next week, beginning at Holbrook on Tuesday, Feb. 3.
