The Roadrunners pushed their season mark to 22-6 with wins over Tuba City and Valley Sanders to close out the penultimate week of the regular season.
Hosting the Warriors last Thursday Holbrook jumped on top 14-8 in the first, thanks in part to seven points from Marlin Martin. In the second Tuba City pulled within a single point by making six of nine free throws. The Roadrunners took control of the game in the third period, outscoring the Warriors by 14 in the frame. Abrian Dickson knocked down a trio of treys and Sylas Chevarillo also found the range once from distance to help Holbrook to a 15-point cushion going to the fourth. That lead was never really threatened down the stretch as Holbrook won the game 57-43.
Dickson led Holbrook with 15 points. Martin added 14; Nathan Johnson, 8; Chevarillo, 7; Quinlan Keoni, 5; and Miireux Begaii and Marcel Young, 4 each. The Roadrunners made eight three-point shots and converted nine of 14 at the line.
Tuba City was led by Roland Becenti and Tristin Begay with 8 points each. The Warriors hit two three-pointers and went 19 for 25 at the line.
Saturday’s game in Valley was controlled early and throughout by Holbrook. Valley had no answer for Holbrook’s defense, quickness or shooting. The Roadrunners met little resistance, building a 53-27 halftime lead which morphed into a 79-47 win. Holbrook had a field day from distance against Valley’s soft zone defense.
The Birds connected on 12 three-point shots led by Dickson with four. Dickson also led the team in scoring with 16 points. Keoni added 14; Young, 11; Alec Smith, 10; Martin and Marcos Clark, 9 each; Begaii, 4; Benson Davis, 3; Chevarillo 2 and Jordan Smith, 1. Holbrook went nine for 15 at the line.
Valley was led by Jowasen Yazzie with 19 points. Johansen Yazzie added, 8; Apollo Smith, 7; Harold Matt and Casey James, 4 each; Travis Silversmith and Zach Shirley, 2 each; and Dennison Roan, 1. The Pirates made three treys and went 18 for 20 at the free throw line.
With the wins Holbrook pushed its season mark to 22-6. After hosting top ranked Snowflake on Tuesday for Senior Night, the Birds will close out the regular season against Alchesay on Friday, Feb. 6, at Whiteriver. Players slated to be recognized on Senior Night are Marlin Martin, Marcos Clark, Sylas Chevarillo, Marcel Young, Alec Smith, Jordan Smith and Quinlan Keoni. Holbrook will be playing in the sectional tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Show Low.
