Head volleyball coach Leslie Baldonado of Holbrook High School returns just five players from last year’s squad, which posted an 18-11 overall record before bowing out in the first round of the state tournament to Coconino. Seniors Alex Jeffers-Sample, Shayna Carlson and Darian Hollins, along with juniors Alishea Kee and Adriana Monroe, will be called upon to lead a young team into a new and difficult season. Joining the returning quintet at this time will be senior Laurie Brown, juniors Adriana Monroe and Destany Begay, sophomores Kendra Monroe and Lexi Beltran, and freshman Sydney Plumb.
Like all the other team sports, the volleyball team will play in a new section for what is most likely now just a one-year deal. The team will be on the road through the first three matches and two tournaments before playing at home for the first time on Tuesday, Sept. 15, when the Lady Roadrunners host Coconino.
They open at Window Rock on Tuesday, Sept. 1, followed by a trip to Winslow two days later. The Payson Tournament will take up Sept. 4 and 5. On Sept. 8, Holbrook plays at Ganado.
Later in their season the Roadrunners will face the likes of Blue Ridge, Monument Valley, Tuba City, Payson and Snowflake, all of which have been powerful teams in recent years.
