The Lobos came up just short in last year’s title game, finishing the season 12-2 as the Division IV state runner-up in football. With a new head coach this year in Kay Solomon, the Snowflake squad started quickly with an opening week 40-0 shutout win over Amphitheatre on Friday.
Coach Solomon and his staff have a veteran roster set to go for another deep playoff run. Sixteen seniors and 14 juniors are joined by only one sophomore currently on the Lobo roster.
Even with all the shuffling in divisions and sections, Snowflake’s football team essentially remained in the old 3A East division. The Lobos’ schedule is one of the tougher ones, with Fountain Hills, Coolidge, Florence, Blue Ridge, Payson, Show Low and Winslow awaiting them in the coming weeks. This week they hope to push their early season mark to 2-0 when they host Tempe Prep in their home opener.
Like Snowflake, the Knights also played last week, picking up a 61-0 win over Mohave Accelerated of Bullhead City. While that was a big score, the team from Bullhead is in no way similar to a team as talented as Snowflake. Last season Tempe Prep went 12-2 and, like Snowflake, ended the season as a state runner-up, albeit in Division V. This year Tempe appears to be a solid early season opponent for the Lobos.
