The Lady Roadrunners appeared poised to win their first regular season match of the season Tuesday evening at Muñoz Gym. The Holbrook squad fought its way to a two-game lead over Window Rock, winning the first opening games of the set. The Lady Scouts slowly battled back, though, taking game three, then pulled even with the fourth game win to force the decisive game five, They won that, too, ending Holbrook’s hope of that elusive first power point victory.
A match which saw several long volleys by two fairly evenly matched teams began to sway in favor of Window Rock early in the third game. Once Holbrook lost the momentum from the first two games, it was never quite able to wrestle it back from the visitors.
The Birds finished with 52 kills in the match, led by Shayna Carlson’s 16 put downs. Kendra Monroe added 11, Adriana Monroe, 10; Sydney Plumb, nine; Carla Plumb, three; Laurie Brown, two; and McKenzi Thompson, one.
Adriana Monroe, Destany Begay and Laurie Brown each served four aces during the match. Carlson added three.
Brown led the team in set assists, finishing with 34. Begay added 10 and Carla Plumb had three.
Defensively, there were several opportunities with the long volleys. Lexy Beltran led the team with 41 digs. Adriana Monroe added 38; Kendra Monroe, 28; Brown, 16; Carlson, 14; Begay, 11, Carla Plumb, seven; and Sydney Plumb, three.
With the loss Holbrook fell to 0-5 on the season. After hosting Show Low on Thursday, the Roadrunners will travel to Show Low on Tuesday, Sept. 29, for a rematch. On Oct. 1 they will host a tough Monument Valley team.
