Former Winslow High School science teacher, boys’ basketball coach, assistant baseball coach and assistant football coach Ricky Greer has been hired as activities coordinator at Hopi Junior/Senior High School in Keams Canyon. He was allowed out of his Winslow Unified School District contract by the administrative team and governing board, and assumed his duties at Hopi Oct. 19.
Despite a history of winning records, teams that played hard, and a great deal of support from the community and players, Greer was replaced as the head basketball coach at WHS following last season. It was an administrative decision and the reasons for it were never made public.
In his last year as Bulldog basketball coach, Greer guided his team to the second round of the state tournament with a 20-9 record despite having lost 10 players to graduation in 2014. Of the team’s nine losses, two were to the state champion Snowflake Lobos and seven were to teams with 20 or more wins. The Bulldogs even avenged an opening day loss to Window Rock by beating the Scouts twice later in the season. Window Rock won 21 games last season.
After the resignation of former athletic director Wallace Youvella Jr., officials at Hopi High School became aware of Greer’s situation at Winslow, sought him out and offered him the position available after interviewing several interested applicants. Greer will oversee the athletic departments at both Hopi Junior High and High School.
Greer said in an interview that it was difficult to leave his alma mater. Many close friendships had developed in his 11 years on the Winslow staff and especially among his students. At the same time, he stated that he is excited for the new challenges the leadership position will bring and helping to build upon the great traditions existing at Hopi High School.
