The Lady Roadrunners went 2-3 at the Valley Christian Tournament played at the beginning of last week.
The Holbrook squad opened pool play on Monday with its best performance of the tournament, handing Poston Butte a 56-26 loss. The Roadrunners led by 14 at the half and cruised to the 30-point win. Quanyyah Lester led the team in scoring with 14 points. Ariyana Pratt added 11, and Dishie Kinlicheenie, Tyler Pacheco and Aiyana Gary each had 6.
Later that afternoon Holbrook fell to Snowflake, 45-42. The Birds led by seven at the half and pretty much led the entire second half until the final minutes when Snowflake’s Emily Ballard connected on a pair of three-point shots to give the Lady Lobos the lead for good. Pratt continued her solid play with 15 points. Lester added 9, while Laurie Brown and Dakota Dick each netted 6.
The Roadrunners played poorly in a 43-33 win over Tempe Tuesday afternoon. Both teams struggled to score early, but the Roadrunners held a 25-16 halftime lead. Holbrook’s defense got the job done in the second half, but the offense was stagnant with just 18 points. Pratt again led the team with 14 points. Sophomores Dick and Pacheco each netted 9, while their classmate Gary helped with 6.
That night Holbrook met up with Maricopa, last year’s Division II state title winner. The Roadrunners defeated this team last year, but this time around the Lady Rams held the upper hand. They jumped on the Birds early, outscoring them 22-8 in the first period and never looked back, handing Holbrook a 65-35 loss. Gary led the Birds in scoring with 12 and Pratt added 9.
Holbrook’s final game of the tournament was played Wednesday afternoon against St. Mary’s. The Roadrunners played well through the first half and trailed just 29-25 at the break. The third period was the difference, as the Runners were outscored 19-12. They played tough in the fourth, but could get no closer than the 59-50 final score. Brown led Holbrook’s offense with 13 points, while Gary and Lester each pumped in 9. In the physical contest Holbrook went to the free throw line 31 times, making good on 27 of those attempts to stay in the game.
Pratt was selected to the all tournament team for her efforts in the five games.
The Roadrunners entered January ranked 25th in power points. They will need to overcome one of the toughest schedules this month if they want to reach the state tournament for the eighth consecutive year. They will travel to Page on Saturday, Jan. 9, then host Winslow on Wednesday, Jan. 13. On Friday, Jan. 15, they play at Snowflake, followed by a long trip to Valley Christian the next day. Holbrook is currently 9-8 overall and 3-3 in power point contests.
