The Holbrook Roadrunners split their two games last week, losing to Window Rock and defeating Page.
Hosting former Roadrunner coach Raul Mendoza and his Window Rock Scouts, the Roadrunners fell behind by three in the first, but cut the margin to two points at the half. Unfortunately for their fans, they fell on cold shooting in the second half, registering just 15 points in a 55-41 loss.
The Birds made a path to the free throw line in the game, which was about the only place they did shoot well, making 20 of 24 attempts. Only eight field goals for the game, including just one in the second half, they weren’t able to keep pace.
Abrian Dickson led the way with 18 points, including 12 from the line. Nathan Johnson added 11; Miireux Begaii, 8; and Benson Davis and Elliot Pete, 2 each.
Window Rock was led by Shammond Goodman with 20. Tyrese Brown added 13.
On Saturday, Holbrook bounced back with a 64-53 home court win over Page.
The Runners trailed by two after the first, but built a three-point lead by the half. Dickson scored 14 of his game high 21 points in the first two periods. Holbrook’s defense clamped down in the third, holding the Sand Devils to just nine points while pushing the lead to double digits. Page made a late game rally, but the Birds held them off for their 20th victory of the season.
Dickson led the team with 21 points. Begaii and Pete added 11 each; Johnson, 7; Davis and Brandon Kester, 4 each; and Rhett Desiderio and Hayden Kinlichee each hit one three-point shot. Holbrook again shot well from the charity stripe, making 15 of 16 attempts.
The Roadrunners head into the final week of the regular season with a 20-8 overall record. They were ranked fifth in the section standings at the beginning of the week, and could finish anywhere from third to sixth overall depending on the outcome of the remaining schedule for section teams. They will play at Chinle tonight (Feb. 3), then will host Monument Valley on Friday, Feb. 5. The Birds won’t know until Saturday morning where they landed in the final section standings. The Division III Section I boys’ tournament begins on Wednesday, Feb. 10, with the semifinals slated on Friday, Feb. 12, and the championship on Saturday, Feb. 13. All section tournament games will be played in Chinle.
