The Winslow Lady Bulldogs defeated the Agua Fria Lady Owls 58-48 in an opening round game of the Arizona Division III State Championship Tournament played at Winslow last Wednesday, and followed that up with 61-58 victory over the Buckeye Lady Hawks in overtime on Saturday at Cesar Chavez High School in Laveen.
Winslow scored the first seven points of the Wednesday game and led 12-5 after the first quarter of play. Agua Fria came back in the second period, but the Bulldogs still led 24-21 at the half. The Owls took their first lead of the game midway through the third quarter as a result of a technical foul. The Bulldogs rallied, though, and built a 39-31 lead going into the final period.
Kash Cannon of Agua Fria was the high scorer of the game with 20 points, but was the only Owl in double digits.
Winslow was led by Danielle James with 17 points. Jenna Yazzie added 11; Adrianna Singer, 10; and Justine Butterfield, 9.
The Bulldogs led the Hawks 10-9 after the first quarter and by just two with the score at 26-24 at the half. They were up 38-34 after three quarters, but Buckeye came back to tie the score at 51-51 at the end of regulation play. Butterfield had a productive overtime period, scoring five of her 12 points in that crucial period.
James led all scorers with 23 points for the victorious Bulldogs. Butterfield with 12 points and Singer with 11 were also in double figures for Winslow.
Jasmine Gonzales led Buckeye with 20 points.
The win improved Winslow’s record to 17-16 and advanced the Bulldogs to a quarterfinal game with top ranked Valley Christian at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 25, at the Gila River Arena in Glendale.
