The Winslow Bulldogs defeated Northland Prep Academy 10-0 on Monday, but lost to Washington 8-6 on Tuesday. The results left them with a 1-4 record for the season going into a game with the Cactus Cobras on Thursday in Phoenix.
In the 10-0 win over the Northland Prep Spartans, C.J. Chacon got the win in a game shortened to five innings by allowing no runs on just three hits in three and a third innings of work. He walked five and struck out three. Junior Villanueva worked an inning and two thirds in relief and allowed no runs on two hits while fanning one.
Winslow scored a run in the first inning on singles by Chacon and Matt Ramos, and took a commanding 7-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth allowed the game to be shortened.
Chacon was 3 for 4, while Ramos and Matt Bollin were each 2 for 3 for the Bulldogs. Nate Hollings was 1 for 1. Rey Chavez-Velez, Darrien “Peanut” Brown and Villanueva were all 1 for 3.
In the loss to the Washington Rams on Tuesday, Kuster Kinlicheenie took the loss, working all eight innings in the extra inning contest and giving up eight runs, only three of which were earned, on 11 hits and a walk. He fanned 10 Rams.
Chacon led off the bottom of the first with a triple and scored to give, the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead but Washington moved out to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the second on three hits and an error. The Rams scored one in the top of the third on two hits, but Winslow tied the game 4-4 in the bottom of the third on a walk, an error and a single by Chavez-Velez.
Washington took a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth on a single and an error, and increased it to 6-4 in the top of the seventh on a walk and a single. The Bulldogs tied the score and sent the game into an extra inning in the bottom of the seventh on a walk and a triple by Chacon.
The Rams scored the winning run in the top of the eighth on two singles and an error. Winslow had a hit batsman after two were out in the bottom of the frame, but he was stranded as the game ended.
Chavez-Velez was 2 for 3 at the plate with a double for Winslow. Chacon was 2 for four with two triples. Brown was two for four. The Bulldogs had only those six hits, and five of their runs were unearned.
The Bulldogs were slated to host the Blue Ridge Yellowjackets on Monday and the Holbrook Roadrunners on Tuesday. They will host the Show Low Cougars on Saturday, March 12, and the Youngker Roughriders on Wednesday, March 23.
