Accidents involving three semi-trucks closed the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 last Thursday as Hazmat teams responded to the scene after a reported battery fluid spill.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, at about 3:09 a.m. on March 17, a semi truck was eastbound near milepost 259 when the driver lost control of the vehicle and rolled it onto its side. A second semi truck, also traveling eastbound, struck the rolled over vehicle. The semi that rolled was carrying car batteries and a small amount of battery fluid leaked out onto the roadway. In an attempt to avoid the collision, another semi ran off the road. As a result, the eastbound lanes were closed until around 10 a.m. as the Hazmat team addressed the spill.
Two individuals from the semi trucks that collided were transported to an area hospital for treatment of their injuries. There were no injuries reported in the third vehicle. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
