Grant Will Fund Half The Cost Of Replacing HPD Bullet-Proof VestsJanuary 23rd, 2008
By Tammy Gray-Searles The amount may seem small in comparison to some other grants, but the benefits are incalculable. Chief of Police DWayne Hartup recently announced that the Holbrook Police Department was awarded a $2,788.50 grant for the purchase of new bullet-proof vests. The grant was provided by the 100 Club, a non-profit organization that exists both to support families of fallen officers and firefighters, and to im-prove safety for those still in the line of duty. Hartup explained that the department was facing a shortage in funding for the vests, and had several that needed to be replaced. The vests cost about $1,000 each and last for about five years. He began search-ing for a source of money to purchase the needed vests. Aware that the 100 Club offered support to families of fallen and seriously injured officers, Hartup learned that the group also offered money to improve officer safety. “An offshoot is that they have money available to police agencies for officer safety to keep those things from happening," he remarked. He applied for a grant, explaining the department’s situation, and was awarded with a grant that will cover 50 percent of the cost of the needed vests. The grant money, combined with $2,788.50 in city funds, will purchase six new vests for the department.
