Petitioner Withdraws Paperwork For Recall Of Mayor, CouncilmanFebruary 27th, 2008
By Tammy Gray-Searles Lawrence Gallegos has withdrawn his paperwork seeking the recall of Holbrook Mayor Jeff Hill and Councilman Kent Darris. On Thursday, Feb. 21, Gallegos filed the following statement with the city, “I, Lawrence U. Gallegos request the return of my recall application filed in your office on or about Feb. 6, 2008.” Gallegos had indicated that he intended to withdraw the petition after speaking with the Tribune-News regarding the circumstances under which it was filed. According to Gallegos, he did not write the state-ments regarding Hill and Darris, and thought he was simply filing to run for city council. Gallegos stated that he was provided the paperwork by Pam Searls and told that he would not have to collect signatures or do anything other than sign the paperwork and turn it in. He noted that he signed the paperwork without reading it, and after learning of its contents no longer wished to proceed. In a letter to the editor, Searls confirmed Gallegos’ claim that he did not write the statements in the re-call paperwork filed with the city. According to Searls, the statements were decided upon by members of the Holbrook Back on Track (BOT) group, of which Gallegos is not a member. Searls did not indicate who is included in the membership of the BOT group. According to WHOIS Internet registration, the group’s Web site is registered to David M. Newlin, and was created on Oct. 20, 2007. According to Searls, Gallegos was aware that the petitions were for a recall. She indicated in her letter that he was asked to file the paperwork because none of the members of the BOT group were willing to do so due to an “atmosphere of fear” in Holbrook. With the application for recall withdrawn by Gallegos, the prospect of a recall under his petition is ended.
