Sweet Wheels Car Club Seeks Help From Town Of TaylorMarch 6th, 2008
By Naomi Hatch Work is under way for the Sweet Corn Festival, which is held each Labor Day weekend in Taylor. Members of the Sweet Wheels Car Club attended the Feb. 27 Taylor Town Council meeting to make re-quests for some changes in their car show. Club President Ernie Ortega asked for permission to move the car show to the soccer field in Freeman Park, because the Little League field is too small and they have to drive their vehicles on the dirt road to get to the field. He noted that last year they had 55 entries and were cramped. Ortega also asked for help from the town to purchase trophies, saying that they couldn’t raise the entry fees and get participants. Councilman Jay Whipple noted that in the past, the other activities either pay for themselves or bring in revenue for the town. Ortega commented that many car shows offer incentives such as first place or a special trophy, some-thing that would draw a lot of automobiles. “What we’re trying to do is get bigger. If we get more people to come, then we’ll be able to pay for our own items,” he said. Councilman Jim Gibson expressed concern with safety if people cross Paper Mill Road. Councilman Brian Birtcher suggested the request be considered during the budget process. “Perhaps the best thing to do is allow staff to work with Mr. Ortega and work out some of the details,” said Town Manager Eric Duthie, noting they weren’t aware of this until late. Ortega pointed out that they need to get the flyers out, and would like to know what incentives to put on them. Vice Mayor Jim Gibson who was conducting the meeting asked Duthie and other staff members to work with Ortega and bring the item back to the council.
