Taylor Council Approves Bid Issuance For Senior Center Renovation ProjectMarch 6th, 2008
By Naomi Hatch The Taylor Town Council approved going to bid to renovate the Silver Creek Senior Center Feb. 27. In 2006, the town received a $271,000 Community Development Block Grant from the Arizona Department of Housing for projects that would benefit low income or elderly citizens. Public hearings were held and the council approved using the funds to renovate the senior center, which is located behind the Snowflake-Taylor campus of Northland Pioneer College. In a memorandum dated Feb. 7, former town manager Steve Sturgell updated his successor, Eric Duthie, on the project. He noted that in early 2007 SSPW Architects of Scottsdale was selected to prepare the design plans, which have been completed, and the firm is in the process of finalizing the bid documents. The plans call for a kitchen renovation with new equipment and an approximate 1,200-square foot addition to the center. Duthie was requesting approval for bid issuance, with the first publication on March 5, the bids opened on April 3 and then reviewed by the town council at an April meeting. Duthie said that building official Jeff Johnson has been working on this project. Councilman Brian Birtcher questioned the original estimate of $300,000 and the fact that only $230,000 of the grant will be available for the project because the architect fee is $33,000 and there is a $7,000 technical assistance fee to pay to the Northern Arizona Council of Governments. Duthie explained that once the bids have been received and they determine the low bidder, they will work with that contractor on his ideas to get the project into the correct price range. The council unanimously approved the bid issuance for the renovation of the Silver Creek Senior Center.
