Joseph City Founders Day Celebration Opens Friday

    Joseph City will celebrate its 132nd year during Founders Day festivities on Friday and Saturday, March 21 and 22.
    Many things are planned for the two-day event, including music, sports events, memorabilia, food and fun.
    Founders Day will kick off at 6 o’clock Friday evening at the B.G. Bennett Auditorium on the Joseph City Junior/Senior High School campus with a quilt display, as well as pictures and memorabilia of Joseph City in the foyer areas.     The JCHS choirs will present a musical review at 7 p.m. on Friday in the auditorium.
    Saturday’s schedule will kick off at 7 a.m. at the LDS church with a flag raising ceremony conducted by Troop 259, a free breakfast sponsored by the Midway Ward, free 5K and 10K fun runs, and a free bike race. To enter the fun runs, call Kent Baldwin at 288-3460; to enter the bike race, call Scott or Cheryl Griffith at 288-3610.
    A volleyball tournament is scheduled at 9 a.m. at the JCHS gym. Four-man teams may sign up at the music program Friday night, by 8 a.m. Saturday at the breakfast or by calling Karen Mosier at 288-3532 or 386-0729.
    Also slated at 9 a.m. is a dog parade at Tanner Park. Organizers ask that all dogs be on leashes, and that no cats or aggressive dogs be entered. To enter, call Karen Mosier at 288-3532 or 386-0729.
    A hoop shoot for all ages 5 and older is planned at 10 a.m. at the old gym. To enter, contact Sam Johnstun at 288-3377 or 587-0212.
    A turkey shoot will be held at 10 a.m. at the crossroads south of town. Bring your own gun and ammu-nition. For more information, call Robert Pugh at 288-3679. An archery shot will also be held. Bring your own bow and arrows. For more information, call Clarence Hansen at 288-9064.
    A barbecue and auction will be held from 12 noon to 3 p.m. at the Joseph City Fire Department on Main Street. Lunch will be served for $4 for a small plate or $7 for a large plate. Takeout will also be avail-able. Local businesses have donated items for the auction. All proceeds will be used to buy new rescue and emergency equipment for the fire department.     A double elimination racquetball tournament for ages 14 and up is slated at 3 p.m. at JCHS. Please reg-ister at the Friday night music program, the Saturday morning breakfast or call Sam Johnstun at 587-0212 or 288-3377.
    Kite flying is planned at 4 p.m. on Porter Road just before the landfill. The goal is to have 132 (or more) kites flying in the sky to represent each year of Joseph City’s existence.
    The celebration will close with a family dance for all ages planned from 8 to 11 p.m. in the old gym. Admission is $3 for singles and $10 per family. Photos with lots of fun props will be available for a small additional charge.
