NCSO Ranks High In Fund-Raising For State Special Olympics Program

March 25th, 2008

By Linda Kor
Sgt. Tony Miller of the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office presented the Board of Supervisors with an update on fund-raising for Arizona Special Olympics.
Miller, who has been in charge of fund-raising endeavors on behalf of the county for the past 15 years, informed the board that the sheriff’s office has been very successful in raising funds for this charity.
“This was the fifth year for the Polar Bear Plunge in Show Low, and this year we had 69 plungers and raised a total of $17,000,” stated Miller. Over the past five years, the plunge has raised a total of $67,000.
“Fifteen years ago, Sheriff Gary Butler put me in charge of the Torch Run and we raised $356 that first year, and I’m going to say that was because I’m a cop and I didn’t know the first thing about fund-raising. But over the past five to six years, Navajo County has ranked number one in the state, even over Maricopa County, in raising the most funds for Special Olympics with the Torch Run. We have raised a total of $150,000 with that event so far,” stated Miller.
He also mentioned that for the seventh year, the sheriff’s office is raffling a motorcycle valued at more than $17,000. Tickets are $10 each, and the drawing will be held on Dec. 19 or when all 6,000 tickets are sold.
The board also recognized Leann Baker, secretary for the Building and Grounds Department, for demonstrating drive, focus and dedication to the efforts of the department. Denise Hoftra, payroll specialist, was recognized for exhibiting an extraordinary amount of dedication and devotion to the county.
