Courtyard Project Is Under Way At The Holbrook Public LibraryMay 3rd, 2008
By Linda Kor The Holbrook Public Library is working on a project to beautify its environment by creating a xeriscape courtyard, which means dry landscaping, in order to keep water usage to a minimum. The lot currently is covered in pavement that is being taken out by students in the Holbrook High School Construction Technologies Block. Once the pavement is removed, pavers with pathways, benches, a bike rack and a tree will be put in. “We had planned for some time to do this project, but when I attended the recent parent-teacher confer-ence I noticed one of the students looking over the Bobcat Tractor training manual and the idea struck me that this might be an opportunity to work with the schools,” stated Librarian Wendy Skevington. The project is expected to last at least three weeks, with the hope that it can be completed before the school year ends. According to instructor Adrian Tubbs, this is a great opportunity for the kids. “This class teaches them how to work, use equipment, and creates employability skills,” he stated. Although the cost of the project is not yet certain, the city will supply the pavers, the Friends of the Library will be paying for the concrete and the labor is being donated by the HHS students.
