New Ordinance Outlines Process For Naming Facilities In TaylorMay 21st, 2008
By Naomi Hatch The Taylor Beautification Committee has been designated as the organization to start the process of naming town facilities. At the April 23 Taylor Town Council meeting, council members asked staff members and Town Attor-ney Sterling Solomon to put together an ordinance for naming town facilities, because there had been a request from the Beautification Committee to name the park where the gazebo sits next to the Taylor Mu-seum. The name the Beautification Committee suggested wasn’t approved, and other suggestions were made at that time. Town Manager Eric Duthie advised the council May 14 that they took the Casa Grande ordinance, which was appropriate for Taylor, as a sample. The draft ordinance presented that evening was unanimously approved, so there is now a process to follow to name such things as geographic landmarks or facilities. The ordinance includes everything but streets, because a street naming ordinance was adopted previously. There is a nomination process that must be followed. It will be administered by the Beautification Committee, which will meet to review any proposals. If a nomination meets the criteria, the committee will hold a meeting to solicit public opinion, vote on the suggestion and send a recommendation to the town council, which will have the final say on the matter. Nominations must include petitions containing not less than 25 signatures. Councilman Brian Birtcher expressed concern that the ordinance states the name will be a lifetime name. He said he felt it should be for 20 years rather than a lifetime. Councilwoman Jane Lee explained, “It’s written so names are done for a reason.”
