Arthurs’ Victorian Home Selected For Winslow’s ‘Good Job’ AwardJuly 3rd, 2008
By Linda Kor Each year for the past six years the Winslow Historic Preservation Commission has awarded the Good Job Award to homes or businesses in the city that have restored a building in a way that preserves its historic authenticity. This year, Commission Chairwoman Gayle Kasulaitis presented the award to Bill and Barbara Arthur for the restoration of their late Victorian home on North Warren Avenue. The house was built in 1915, and was purchased by the Arthurs in the 1980s. “The house had been abandoned for about four or five years when we purchased it from the Oscar Severson family,” stated Bill Arthur. The home includes Flemish eaves and stone windowsills, and is a brick home, but it has always had a stucco exterior. The criteria for receiving the award is that the building be at least 50 years old, and that the restoration maintain the historic integrity of the original construction. It should also have some historic reference, such as being occupied by a person of historic significance or the site of an event of historic significance. A site may also be chosen because of a unique architectural style. Some of the past recipients of the award are the Seattle Grind Coffee Shop, Roadworks Gifts and Souvenirs, the Patton house on First Street, and the Boles’ house and Judy’s Beauty Salon, both on Kinsley Street. The commission is currently determining a new set of criteria for the award, which is a bronze plaque with the words “Good Job Award” engraved on it. “In the past we’ve selected the recipients of the award based on what we saw in the community. We plan on changing the procedure so that people can apply for the award,” stated Kasulaitis. The award is affixed to the structure, and remains on the building even if it is sold.
