Drive-By Shooting Leads To Arrest Of A Winslow ManOctober 8th, 2008
On Sept. 24, the Winslow Police Department received a report that shots were being fired at the Circle K store located at 625 W. Third St. When officers arrived at the scene, the two men they spoke with stated that their vehicle was shot at by unknown persons in a small passenger car, and that the car had also struck their vehicle, causing damage. While a report was being filed with the officers at Circle K, several more calls came into the WPD reporting gunfire in the south side area of the city. The callers reportedly stated that shots were fired from a small passenger car and a house identified as the residence of Francisco Mata, located in the 300 block of Adams Street. Officers converged on the area and located a vehicle fitting the de scri ption given by wit-nesses with damage consistent with the reported collision at Circle K. Officers detained Francisco Benito Mata, 43, and another man, both of Winslow. Investigation at the scene reportedly resulted in the recovery of evidence of a weapons offense. The report noted that further investigation resulted in the seizure of nearly 11.5 ounces of marijuana and a small quantity of dangerous drugs. Mata was booked into the Navajo County Jail on charges of aggravated assault, felony endangerment, drive-by shooting and other weapon offenses. Additional charges including drug offenses were added on Sept. 29. Despite the reported gunfire, no one was injured in the incident, which will continue to be investigated.
