Winslow Schools Plan Meeting On Funding Cuts On ThursdayFebruary 11th, 2009
Winslow Schools Plan Meeting On Funding Cuts On ThursdayBy Sam Conner The Winslow School District will be impacted by the cut in funding contained in the budget recently adopted by the legislature and signed by Governor Jan Brewer. There will be a number of changes necessitated by the lessening of the funding, but final decisions as to what those changes will be have yet to be determined. Parents, pupils and other interested citizens are invited to attend a meeting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12, in the Performing Arts Center at Winslow High School to hear proposals, voice their opinions or offer suggestions. Superintendent Bob Mansell said on Monday that the meeting is not a decision making meeting, but rather an opportunity to share information. He and Assistant Superintendent Doug Watson and others will share information about what is happening around the state and what could happen in Winslow. There will be an opportunity for citi-zens to ask questions and to share ideas. Mansell did say that the situation is serious and seems likely to have an effect. It has been reported that Flagstaff is contemplating having to lay off 140 persons, according to a recent story. He said that the estimated 20 percent cut in state funding could cost Winslow approximately $2.5 million. Parents and other citizens interested in the Winslow schools and in the changes likely to be considered are en-couraged to attend the meeting on Thursday.
